Not Your Ordinary Valentine Message

Yeah, right! Valentine’s Day is just lurking around the corner. But before you let yourself carried away by the sweet-nothings of your beloved, before your raging hormones could get the worst out of you (haha), before the serotonins, endorphins and the fragrant aroma from the loads of chocolates and flowers you receive can get you on a state of euphoria and bliss (scientific, eh?), would you please stop? Just stop! Then, ask this perennial question. How and why did the heart became the symbol of love? Seriously, haven’t you ever thought about it?

To help you find possible answers to that question, I would like to share with you an essay entitled “Heart and Liver” which was shared to me by my teacher, mentor and friend, UP professor, Mykel Andrada. This one of the many essays in the book titled “House of Memory” by retired Filipino Literature professor and lecturer of the University of San Carlos-Cebu, Prof. Resil Mojares, is a beautifully crafted essay that provokingly questions why not the liver is used as a symbol of love. In a deeper note, it digs down to the core of Filipino languages – its etymology and culture. Read on!

Heart and Liver
By Resil Mojares

How did it come to pass that we should love with our hearts and not with our liver?

The pre-Spanish Filipino, like many of his contemporaries in Southeast Asia, believed that the liver (atay) is the seat of love. More; it is the bodily center of a person’s being, the source of power, courage and strength. It is named in Philippine languages – atay, atey, hatay, ati – and has spawned numerous derivations that signify what is treasured, affective and elemental.

In Tagalog, emotion is dalamhati (literally, “inside the liver”) and intense feelings of grief, yearning and happiness are pighati, lunggati, and luwalhati. Metaphorically, atay is used to refer to the best of anything, so the most fertile land is atay ng lupa, and the softest, most “feeling” part of the hand or leg is atay ng paa or, in Cebuano, atay-atay. In old Tagalog, a proud and powerful man is called pagmamayatay (“he who claims to have the liver”). In Cebuano, one speaks of glowing praise as makapadaku sa atay (“enlarges the liver”) and of what causes a sharp, rending emotion as makapakitbi sa atay (“curdles the liver”).

So elemental is the liver that among the Bagobo, Manobo and Mandaya, one eats a piece of an enemy’s liver to gain his power and enhances one’s strength. The aswang knows what the best body part is, and aims straight for the liver (the body’s bloodiest organ) instead of the heart.

Such native knowledge is not particular to Filipinos but found among early peoples in other parts of the world. Ancient medical theorists, like the second-century Greek physician Galen, ascribed to the liver great powers both physiological and mystical. It is then no surprise that our native expressions have equivalents in other languages, like English (to be “liverish” is to feel an internal discomfort and to be “lilylivered” is to be wanting in courage).

In contrast, the mythology of the heart is not as attractive nor is its chemistry as complex. The most versatile organ, the liver has some 200 different functions: it manufactures bile, removes poisons, processes nourishing sugars, forms antibodies, purifies the blood, enhances its flow, and more. It has amazing recuperative powers for when a part of it is damaged it can grow new cells to replace lost ones. If there is a chemistry to love, there is no better place for it than this wonderful chemical capital of the body, the liver. Beside it, the heart is a rather dull organ.

I’m sure all this is not convincing anyone to barter the heart for the liver. I don’t expect anyone would be sending a Valentine’s card with a drawing of the liver instead of the heart. The merchandising possibilities do not look attractive – jaundice yellow instead of the signature red, and instead of Cupid shooting arrows into a heart, a witch or sorcerer digging in for the liver? And I have to admit, it does not sound romantic to speak of one love-struck as giatay. (Though, come to think of it, “struck by pestilence” – which is what giatay means – is not at all an inaccurate metaphor for love.)

We have come to fancy the simpler, softer, sanitary imagery of the heart. Yet, turning away from the more darkly visceral symbolism of the liver, we may have missed out on the denser, earthier, more dangerous and labyrinthine qualities of love.

Your Hallmark message of a tame and prettified love do not quite grab the heart, er, I mean, liver, as this old Palawanon verse: On the areca tree by the wayside, / I etched a sign: / My liver hungers for you.

And so, what now? Shall we say this now to our significant other, “I liver you, my love”? Anyway, a passionate valentines day to all of you, guys! (liver icon here) 🙂

The article says all about love that has a confrontation between the heart and the liver, but i agree that liver has a lots of functions so why is the liver is not the symbol of love!so the reason maybe hard to understand, but know that God takes away when he has something better to give and thats what we call love!!💘💖

  3. I love the story but i do not know what are the purpose of the story but i think that it is true that the liver is the most versatile organ that have a lot of work in our body but why we do not use this when we send love letter into our love ones we use the heart because its symbolized love not the liver ,the liver is only symbolized braveness not a love like in this story i’ v e been read that a native warrior eats the liver of their enemies because they can feel the power or being brave that they kill one their mortal enemies so that they will become a great warrior but not love.
happy valentines day to you ma’am i hope you a very wonderful day specially in valentines day. . .

First of all i would like to greet my adviser in technical writing HAPPY VALENTINES DAY…The story is all about the heart and liver and not a love …But a liver is not a symbol of lvoe but it just a symbolized the great ancient warriors because when they eat the liver of the enemies they feel powerful so liver the is not symbol of but its symbol of being warrior..and so the heart for me is the one symbolized love it also past to generation to generation so we can’t changed it….that’s all folks

  5. well I can say that the heart is a dull organ only, it is the symbol of love. Emotion and intense feelings of grief, yearning and happiness is in the liver base on the study but for me it’s very awkward if we use the liver how the way we express our love in our special someone or love one. Instead a liver I must chose the heart its romantic than liver.

  8. Yes that is a big question there, but for me if the liver is the sign of love it is a boring and weird because of its shape. For the scientific method it can be possible to because liver have a big function in our body. “Gugmang gi atay” the sayings of the broken hearted person so it is the sign for the person who’s heart is broken and heart for the people in love.

hehehe happy valinetines my dearest maam..love you lots hart2x toorooroot..

  9. for me the liver and the heart are important organ in our body. They say that the liver is the symbol of love and not the heart. I think it’s heart, because when we see my crush my heart is beating faster and faster, please.. prove it that the liver is the right to use to symbol for love so that we know which is true…

  10. All I can say for this “Not Your Ordinary Valentine Message” goes like this. The reason why almost all people used “Heart” as a representation for “Love” is because heart seems like a very romantic symbol to draw than to draw a liver to give to your love ones (di ba?). Most people did not know which among this two organs works in many ways.
Liver works in many ways than the heart. The work of the heart is to pump blood in and out and controls our heartbeat. I think the best way for this issue is that their must be a seminar for this so that all student of SLSU MC can share their opinions about this.

  11. My comment goes like this, I think why they are using the “HEART” symbol, because it is easy for us to draw the “heart” symbol than the liver. and in my own understanding, the heart and liver is just the same, and the only difference between the “heart” and “liver” is, The liver has many functions while the heart is just only a symbol for me.

We don’t have to stress our mind just to know what is the exact meaning of why is the “heart” is symbol of love because the heart and liver is just the same.
like what i have written first, the heart is easy to draw than a liver.

  12. As what I learned from this that mostly of us when we fall in love we used our hearts to be in a relationship to the people. We also need to love our liver because it is very important thing in our life. Once we are in a relationship if we got hurt only our heart have been suffered for a pain but if we don’t love our liver it can give us more problems. If we abuse our liver it can affect to our health. We do give love to our heart but most importantly we should give more love to our liver.

  13. i liver you.haha 😀 sounds akward. The Heart has long been recognized across cultures as being a symbol for love, although we can say that liver has more function than the heart. But for me, I have to say “blame it on cupid”.Cupid shoots arrows throught the heart not on liver 😀

  14. Great article, very interesting its like debate between heart and liver. If i had to choose between heart and liver i should go with the liver. It has many functions and it is also believe that eating the liver makes the body stronger.happy valentines 😀

  15. For me heart is the symbol of love because it emphases life, morality and people says that it is the center of our strong emotion like sadness and happiness. We also can feel our heart beating while liver we cant feel it as we do lots of emotion, like when we are angry, happy, sad, afraid and in-love .And if liver is the symbol of love it is a little bit disgusting because some people eat it to be stronger and considering it as the sign of pride and especially its unusual shape its a little bit boring. So they choose heart as a symbol of love because it give many meaning an emotion.

That’s all ma’am hope you have a great valentines today with your love one,,hart hart hart..

And this is the only one organ that you can feel your emotion and spreed your love to your love ones .And a word heart is have meaning . H-ospitable E-verlasting A-nd R-ight T-rue lovers.

  19. Yes it’s true, liver is better than heart it is because liver have many uses, it is the source of power, courage and strength just like what I’ve read in this article. But the question is, is the liver can feels love? According to my research and what I’m heard from the others they believed that the heart is the one that feels love, anger, hatred and etc, and I also believed that ,because I already felt it.
    HAPPY VALENTINES DAY!!!!

  20. HAPPY VALENTINES DAY TO ALL OF US! As I read the story, it was nice and made me believe that it is true but in my own opinion, it was just only a story of old times. For me, it was just a story because liver is not a symbol of love but it’s the heart. For example, when we love someone, it is the heart beats faster and not the liver. We didn’t even know what happens to the liver when we love someone. Therefore, I conclude that heart is the only symbol of love and not the liver.

  21. Yeah right! Valentine is just only about an ordinary message, giving chocolate or flower or etc. to your love ones, it’s all about how you love your love ones because loves not depend of what you give to your love ones. Am i right? Valentine gift is a impression to your girlfriend or boyfriend. It depends on you what you will give during valentines day. Happy valentines day!

  25. For me base of my understanding about the ‘Not Your Ordinary Valentines Message” If i want to choose between the heart and liver i would rather choose heart.Because the heart is the most protected organ, being surrounded by the rib cage and the lungs. Love, the real kind, not the crap almost every teenager claims to feel, is also very protected and is given to only a select number of people. Whenever you lose something/ someone very dear to you, you can feel a pain right around your heart. Don’t ask me why that is, I just know it from personal experience. As time went on, people just associated the heart with love.

    And that’s all i can say …

And i would like to great my beautiful teacher… HAPPY VALENTINES ,,,

  26. Happy valentines ma’am.:)
What a nice story. Bitaw nuh. why not the liver use as symbol of love? especially during valentines day? For me, even though liver has a many functions than a heart, if you imagine deeper and deeper (chaaaaringgg), heart is very sensitive than the liver. Heart feel love, but atay did not. If your eyes saw your crushes, heart will response not a liver. If you touch the hand of your girlfriend or boyfriend the heart will beat faster not your liver. only heart can do that. If you are happy the heart feel it, not your liver. the heart distribute the blood to all parts of the body including the liver. And the heart now is in the higher position that is why we choose it. Because heart is placed above the liver. hehehehehe.

Honestly, heart can feel love not the liver. We used heart not a liver as a symbol of love because of its ability to feel love. Your UNIliver can’t do that.heheheh
    Good night.:)

    .hahaha [jaga ra bai]

I already know which of this two organs have a lot of functions.
But for me it is not wrong that “heart” is used as a representation for “love” even though Liver functions a lot than Heart.
Its because heart can feel emotion and it is the emotional organ in our body ,and it has a relationship with the “emotional brain.”

  29. After i read the “Not Your Ordinary Valentines Message” if will choose between the liver and heart best on my experience i will choose heart.Because heart has been associated with strong emotion or affection. So this has continued for centuries. Actually, emotions initiate in the brain, from the amygdala then the hypothalamus then to the sympathetic nervous system which causes hearts to race and BP to rise. This is a simplified answer but it is easy to make the romantic association.

On my own understanding about that topic is all about the heart and liver. right? so all i can say the heart symbolizes love while the liver has the many function in our body but it is not symbolizes of love because since when i was burn this world, heart is the really means of love because love can felt pain, it feels to love someone. While the liver cannot felt the pain and did not feel if how to love the person. Thats all.. thank you.. 🙂

  34. After I read the article, it made my mind open and knew how it all started.
And based on what I read about the criticism between the heart and the liver as a symbol of love. For me, it sounds good and looks better ,if the symbol of love is the heart. Although the liver has many functions and uses, the liver cannot do that alone without the heart.
And then in our society, its not easy to change a belief that was already part of our custom. Because we knew that almost the whole humanity believes that the heart is the symbol of love.
